Career Pathway Forum
The Rotary Club of Port Macquarie West in partnership with NCI TAFE, Port Macquarie Community College, Central West Community College and Port Macquarie Hastings Council piloted a Year 10 student career pathways forum in 2010 at Westport High School. The Forum operated in 3 stages:-
Stage 1
A variety of organisations conducted presentations and interacted with the students in order to increase their knowledge about local and distant educational pathways and employment opportunities, including:-
· NCI TAFE
· Department of Education and Training – School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships and State Training Services
· Central West Community College
· Commonwealth Australia Bank
· Essential Energy
· Port Macquarie Community College
· Birdon Group
· Charles Sturt University – Police Careers
· University of Newcastle – Primary Teaching and Nursing
· University of NSW Rural Clinical School
Stage 2
Students were involved in resume development workshops conducted by NCI TAFE and were requested to submit the completed resume to a representative of Rotary Port Macquarie West.
Stage 3
The students attended mock interviews on a one-to-one basis lasting approximately 30-40mins. The interviewer was then able to give the student feedback on aspects such as qualify of the application, how the student spoke and represented him/herself, whether they showed a reasonable degree of enthusiasm and knowledge of the job for which they are applying and any other feedback the interviewer thought to be relevant.
Result of the Pilot Program
As a result of the piloted program, Westport High School and 2 additional schools have requested the program operate again in 2011.
