Construction Industry Network
The Construction Industry Network is represented by the Master Builders Association, NCI TAFE-Wauchope campus, Department of Education and Training, State Training Services and MEGT Australian Apprenticeship Centre. The network aims to develop employment and training opportunities for young people in the construction and related industries by enhancing existing and creating new career pathways whilst addressing regional skills shortages. They have organised a number of activities and they include the following:
Industry Tours - In 2010 the Network organised an Industry Tour for local teachers where they spent the day visiting several local building and construction companies so as to keep up to date with what is happening in industry and hopefully inspire students to choose a career in building and construction. A great day was had by all, teachers agreeing that it was a worthwhile exercise and suggesting that we organise a similar day for the students.
Step Out - A group of students from both Wauchope High and Kempsey High Schools participated in the Australian Brick and Blocklaying Training Foundations “Step Out” program in October 2010.
This program allows students the opportunity to experience hands-on training within their school environment, by constructing a permanent project on the school grounds. Students work with a qualified bricklayer for a week and additional to the practical experience, cover theory such as OHS, manual handling, how to plan and organise a project and laying bricks and blocks. Wauchope High constructed an area of seating, whilst Kempsey High constructed a BBQ.
The Network is currently working on developing their own program, utilising local trades people/trainers and incorporating a numeracy component to the program to improve the competence in this area.
