Hastings Learner Driver Mentor Program
The Hastings Learner Driver Mentor Program is a community partnership to assist disadvantaged youth in gaining their drivers license (ie to meet requisite hours of log book supervised driving) due to inadequate access to a motor vehicle or licensed driver. The provision of adequate training for the mentors and mentees is paramount to this program.
Hastings-Macleay Community Transport (HMCT) will provide access to their vehicles and drivers in order for the program to operate. Young disadvantage people will gain supervised driving lessons to ensure the completion of requisite 120 log book hours.
With the involvement of HMCT this partnership will also provide an intergenerational focus with young people being partnered with and mentored by active mature people within the community. Whilst the primary aim of the program is to assist young people gain their drivers’ licence to increase employability, educational opportunities and life skills it is also envisaged that this program will establish positive relationships between generations.
The Hastings Learner Driver Mentor Program aims to achieve the following objectives:
- Increased access for disadvantaged youth gaining the required hours of supervised driving experience for a P1 licence
- Increased road safety knowledge by both the youth target group and mentor group
- P1 licence obtained by participating youth
- Increase access to education, training and employment opportunities for disadvantaged youth within the Port Macquarie-Hastings LGA by decreasing transportation barriers
- Provide adequate and appropriate training for Mentors and Mentees
- Build intergenerational relationships through positive mentoring
- Build community capacity and infrastructure
- Build social inclusion within the community
- Create a ‘pilot program’ which has the potential to be replicated and expanded by other NSW Community Transport providers and community partnerships through the State.
