Indigenous Aquatic Training - Chatham High
In 2010 Mid Coast Connect facilitated an innovative partnership between the Royal Life Saving Society, Greater Taree City Council (Youth Development - Woombarra Wunggan and Manning Valley Aquatic and Leisure Centre) and Chatham High School. The partnership provides educational pathways and prospective employment for indigenous youth in the aquatic industry, through student participation and completion of the ‘Austswim – Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety’ and ‘Pool Lifeguard’.
An opportunity exists to impact the community through the ‘train-the-trainer’ style approach with students who have successfully completed the training being able to train indigenous and non-indigenous children in water safety as well as associated skills such as CPR and First Aid.
To date, 7 Chatham High School indigenous students have completed their AustSwim Instructors training and commenced the nominal 20 hours of work experience. The partnership will continue to support these students in gaining their full certificate.
