LUSC Youth Space

In 2010, the Hastings Youth Workers Network identified a need for a ‘youth space’ in the Camden Haven area as no such facility existed. Local Camden Haven youth are often precluded from attending youth events held in Port Macquarie due to the physical distance between the two townships. The local youth have a strong identity and are keen to capitalise and enhance their own local youth events and activities. 

River Sesh provides a safe social outlet for local youth to enjoy with youth events such as band nights; games afternoons, as well as education and training opportunities.   The youth space events are supervised, drug and alcohol free.

Local Camden Haven High School students who are keen, energetic and community-minded have formed a committee to organise and run the youth events. The students are supported by mentors from Camden Haven High School teaching staff, The Laurieton United Services Club (LUSC), Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, Mission Australia (Youth Connections), Wesley Uniting (Best Options Youth Mentoring), and Mid Coast Connect.

On the 18^th December 2010 the youth space was launched with ‘River Sesh’, a FREE youth event which saw approximately 230-250 local youth attend. The launch included local bands, the Big Red Bus, and BBQ/drinks. The event was incident free and was a resounding success. The committee is keen to act on the success of launch and continued activity within the youth space.
